> Chiefly, it's expressed in Hearth's Warming Eve where it's stated in the titular holiday's pageant that food can only be grown by the Earth ponies.

sorry, *what*

@hierarchon ok so

earth pony magic is *highly* unspecified in the show itself, but yes it does have to do with growing in some way

@irisjaycomics i'm pretty sure this doesn't just mean 'only Earth ponies know how', but 'only Earth ponies are physically capable'

MLP lore is fucking *wild* apparently

@hierarchon i was going to say, like there's three ways that could break:

- Societal restriction. We already know pony society operates on a rigid anatomy-based class system; maybe the Earth Ponies cornered agriculture at some distant point in the past to give them some leverage over pegasi, unicorns and their ilk. Or everyone else just agrees to mooch off Earth Ponies.
- Informational restriction. Farming is a secret that only the Earth Ponies have the key to truly mastering. Like Monsanto!

@hierarchon
-Biological restriction. Pegasi and unicorns are PHYSICALLY INCAPABLE of farming. This one makes the least sense, because it's clear that they can perform any task earth ponies can, and the presence of complex machinery in Equestria implies that modern agricultural hardware could make up for any physical weaknesses (hollow bones for flight are too brittle to pull a plow, ley lines throw off magic, etc). Maybe the planet of Equestria ITSELF restricts cultivation to EPs somehow?

@hierarchon as an addendum to that train of thought: doesn’t Princess Celestia live in space or something? Couldn’t she theoretically grow things there via hydroponics?

@irisjaycomics @hierarchon so as far as we can tell in the show, it's more of "earth ponies have plant growth related magic" than any other restriction

other ponies *can* farm, but it's less efficient, so the problem with hearths warming was that the new land they moved to was rather desolate at the time, and the earth ponies were the only ones capable of farming well there
